Despicable Me

Looks like our friends over at Universal's animation arm ("Illumination Entertainment") have put out their first trailer for Despicable Me. MacGuf Ligne is doing the actual work on this thing and I must say, it looks decent.

The animation, modeling, texturing, and lighting are pretty well done. No uber cloth simulations or fancy schmancy technical achievements (in the trailer that is), but it did do the job. Not everyone can spend those Pixar $$.

What is most important, is that the trailer made me want to see the movie. Looks to be a good time. Although, come to think of it, I may of said that for Cloudy w/ a Chance of Meatballs when their first trailer released. Now... I have no interest in that film.

I haven't heard for sure, my budget guess is in the (USD) $70 million area.

Looks more like a test than a "teaser," as it doesn't tease. Look OK, although from the "whatever" it was, I'd say the budget was closer to $40 mill. Here's hoping it has a story.

The second trailer for cloudy is better than the first one. It's the same movie...I don't know what made you change your mind...

Simple. The first trailer was just bad. The second was REALLY bad. Unappealing, ridiculous, and worst of all... unappetizing. What's happened at Sony? They used to have some pretty good talent there!

Don't judge Cloudy by it's trailers. The film is awesome.

Any thoughts about cloudy yet?

It's a cute kids film with at least 2 laughs. Inoffensive in a very general audience kind of way. Nice to see Sony go back to basics. Nothing new, but done well enough. Story a collection of gags, some work, many don't. Animation is fun, although designs are simplistic and unappealing. The effects are too realistic for the world they created, and the technical supervision of the film, sadly, takes precedence over artistry. Tech seems to have forgotten it's their jjob to support story and art, not to overtake it. Glad it's doing well at the box office, although I doubt it'll last much longer.
