Bee Movie

Now, I haven't seen Bee Movie yet on the big screen. However, I have seen plenty of clips from it off the internet. Is it me or are the DreamWorks animated films looking worse and worse? (Link above provides clips from the film)

I'm not talking story or animation. The animation looks decent enough and I can't really speak for the story since I haven't seen it yet. However, the character designs, modeling, and texturing of the humans are UGLY. The bees are not much better, but at least acceptable. Not only are the people ugly, but the clothing deformations are horrible. Take a look at Bee Movie when it opens in a few days and pay attention, then come back and let me know what you think. What the hell?

Am I over reacting? Maybe so. But, even with Over The Hedge's humans looking pretty bad, this is a step backwards over at DWA. Pixar is visually blowing DWA out of the water while even the low budget shops are surpassing them too. I've always pulled for them, but I may be jumping ship here.

What gives?

From what I understand, the story is horrible, and Jerry Seinfeld was a difficult director. I dont think anyone is expecting much from this film.

The overall production design (if you can call it that) is pretty horrible. It looks unfinished, and suffers from a too much of that overly intellectualized bruce block b.s. The animation looks fine, but it just doesn't look like any fun.

How would you compare it to Meet the Robinsons designs?

I may be stepping on peoples' toes here but I think even us Animation Mentor students are better than those dreamworks animators.

HAAAA!!!! I'm not the exactly the biggest DWA fan, but NOT because of their animation. Believe you me, there are less than .0000000001% of animation mentor students who can bring to bear the talent and experience of animation and production experience needed to produce the quality of work expected in a professional studio. The ones who can will, like any other good student from another animation school, get snapped up. DWA animation suffers from the lack of great material, NOT bad animation. You can bet when they get finally get a great, original story with great direction, they'll do incredible work. Animating jerry seinfeld as a bee is about as boring as it comes.

Robinsons and Bee movie suffer from similar design problems in that they're less interested in consistancy and creating a believable world than they are in distracting visual puns.

hummmm, you might even step on some of your "Mentors"....The bliss of being a student, been humble shuld be a course on AM.

As for Bee movie, like anon said it is not the animation that might be the problem, it the fact that DW is using Jerry Seinfeld to make or break this film. I do pay my bills as animator, and i did love "Seinfeld", but i am no sure if animation and Jerry Seinfeld works together. but i am sure if it all goes wrong DW will do a few more "Giant Green" films to make up for Bee movie.
And maybe they will even have jobs for fresh animators from AM....because your soooooooo good.
at least with Bee movie they are trying to do different thing, but who knows if it will work.

What an anonymous crowd. :)

I always wondered if it could be one person being bored and starting a "discussion".

Umm... if this was posted by an
Animation Mentor student ...
I don't think this student took to
heart the advice given in the lectures.
I think more likely, its someone looking
to cause trouble for AnimationMentor
... there's unfortunately been some
of this happening on the CG forums ...

once again, as a [insert the name of the school you have a beef with] student, us [insert the name of the school you have a beef with] students are better than everyone else in the entire universe at everything! :-)
